The autumnal equinox signals the start of autumn – a cooler, crispness to the air, the leaves beginning to turn crimson, auburn, and gold, and the apple orchard festivals in the countryside featuring hayrides, caramel apples, and plenty of cider. With the fragrant chrysanthemums and pampas grass in the breeze, many of us reluctantly also know that the autumnal equinox signals that cold and flu season is just around the corner. A good practice which will help prepare our bodies for this onslaught is to establish an immunity boosting routine including certain nutritious supplements, foods, and beverages to the diet.

The Role of Rosehips and Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that’s required for over 300 metabolic functions in the body. It enhances immunity by increasing the production of the immune system protein interferon. It’s best to intake vitamin C everyday for optimal health, and the more natural forms of vitamin C are more easily absorbed by the body than vitamin C is supplements.

  • Rosehips are naturally very high in vitamin C and antioxidants. They are extremely low in natural sugar and their nutrients are easily absorbed by the body.
  • Vitamin C in fruits high in natural sugars can harm or decrease the healthy bacteria in your gut
  • Taking an adequate amount of vitamin C, by drinking a daily bottle of NADI juice for example, can help to prevent getting a cold or flu
  • Also eating or taking supplements of the following herbs, minerals and vitamins, in combination with natural sources of vitamin C will further boost the immune system and protect your body during cold and flu season:
    • Garlic
    • Zinc

There is also a magical feel when breathing in the cool, crisp autumn air is refreshing after a hot, humid summer. It is also believed that exercising outdoors, and in a nature setting, has a healing effect. And physiologically, exercising circulates protective antibodies and white blood cells throughout the body faster making our immune systems more efficient and accessible to nip harmful germs in the bud quickly.

Spiced NADI Cider with Elderflower Liqueur – to be served warm or on ice

  • 3 cups apple cider or apple juice
  • 1 cup NADI juice
  • 1/8 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick (use 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, or to taste, if serving cold)
  • 5 cloves (optional – use 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves if serving cold)
  • 6 oz. elderflower liqueur

In a saucepan over medium heat (if serving warm) or in a punch bowl (if serving cold), mix the apple juice or cider, cinnamon, cloves and lemon juice for 4 – 8 minutes for flavors to blend. Add NADI and elderflower liqueur and allow flavors to blend for another 1 – 2 minutes before serving. (If using a cinnamon stick and cloves, scoop them out before serving)
