There is so much talk about health and wellness these days, and too often people interpret that as vigorous exercise and healthy eating.
Wellness goes far beyond being healthy.
The six dimensions of wellness are Physical, Social, Intellectual, Spiritual, Emotional and Occupational, according to the National Wellness Institute.
Wellness means actively thinking about the choices we make to create a healthy and fulfilling life so we can build resilience and thrive when life throws us challenges.
That can mean saying no to work events or other outings when we would rather spend time with family or friends.
It can mean putting down our devices for a few hours in the evenings to truly unplug from work and enjoy leisure time.
It can mean trying a new hobby, enjoying a beautiful sunset, meditating for a few minutes or simply sitting down with a good book.
Wellness means being present, and nourishing your body and your mind.
While exercise should be part of that, we must also be mindful of what we put in our bodies. Too many rich foods and excessive alcohol, caffeine and sugar can make us feel sluggish and lead to health problems like obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure.
A well-rounded diet with lots of fruits and vegetables helps keep our bodies strong, and replenishes essential vitamins and minerals.
But most adults are falling short by at least a few servings of fruits and vegetables at most meals, according to the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, which can rob the body of key vitamins such as Vitamin C.
Being more mindful of what we eat and drink and how we spend our time can have a profound impact on our health because the two go hand in hand, according to Mindful.org.
